Kumayl Ibn Ziyad was a prominent companion of Amir al Muminin, Imam Ali Ibn Abi Talib (as.) and this sublime Dua was first heard from the beautiful, though anguished, voice of Imam Ali.
According to Allama Majlisi, Kumayl had attended an assembly in the Mosque at Basra which was addressed by Imam Ali in which the night of the 15th of Shaban was mentioned. Imam Ali said- “Whosoever keeps awake in devoutness on this night (15th Shaban) and recites the Dua of Prophet Khizr, undoubtedly that person’s supplication will be responded to and granted.”
When the assembly at the Mosque had dispersed, Kumayl called at the house where Imam Ali was staying, and requested him to inform him of Prophet Khizr’s Dua. Imam Ali asked Kumayl to sit down, record and memorize the Dua which Imam Ali dictated to Kumayl.

Imam Ali then advised Kumayl to recite this Dua on the eve of (i.e. evening preceding) every Friday, or once a month or at least once in every year so that, added Imam Ali,
“Allah may protect thee from the evils of the enemies and the plots contrived by impostors. O’ Kumayl! in consideration of thy companionship and understanding, I grant thee this honor of entrusting this Dua to thee.”

دعا کمیل پڑھنے کے فوائد:”” کامل ابن زیاد امیر المومنین ، امام علی ابن ابی طالب علیہ السلام کے ایک ممتاز ساتھی تھے اور یہ عمدہ دعا سب سے پہلے امام علی کی خوبصورت ، اگرچہ پریشان ، آواز سے سنی گئی تھی۔ علامہ مجلسی کے مطابق ، کمیل نے مسجد بصرہ میں ایک مجلس میں شرکت کی تھی جس سے امام علی نے خطاب کیا تھا جس میں 15 شعبان کی رات کا ذکر کیا گیا تھا۔ امام علی نے فرمایا: ‘جو بھی اس رات (15 شعبان) کو عقیدت کے ساتھ جاگتا ہے اور حضرت خضر کی دعا پڑھتا ہے ، بلاشبہ اس شخص کی دعا قبول کی جائے گی۔’ جب مسجد میں مجمع منتشر ہو گیا تو کمیل نے اس گھر کو بلایا جہاں امام علی قیام کر رہے تھے اور ان سے درخواست کی کہ انہیں حضرت خضر کی دعا کے بارے میں آگاہ کریں۔ امام علی نے کمیل سے کہا کہ وہ بیٹھے ، ریکارڈ کرے اور وہ دعا حفظ کرے جو امام علی نے کمیل کو دی تھی۔ امام علی نے پھر کمیل کو مشورہ دیا کہ یہ دعا ہر جمعہ کے موقع پر (یعنی شام سے پہلے) ، یا مہینے میں ایک بار یا ہر سال کم از کم ایک بار پڑھے تاکہ امام علی نے مزید کہا ، اللہ تمہیں دشمنوں کی شرارتوں سے بچائے اور مکاروں کی سازشوں سے۔ اے کمیل! آپ کی صحبت اور سمجھ بوجھ کو مدنظر رکھتے ہوئے ، میں آپ کو یہ اعزاز آپ کے سپرد کرنے کا اعزاز دیتا ہوں
